"Feelings"

"My Heart Is Open" is a song recorded by Maroon 5 and Gwen Stefani for Maroon 5's fifth studio album, V. The song was written by Adam Levine, Benjamin Levin, Sia Furler, Rodney Jerkins, and Andre Lindal, with production from Benny Blanco, Darkchild, Lindal, and Levine. The song contains many elements of general pop music. Chris Payne of Billboard magazine describes the song as "an emotional piano ballad clearly crafted for Adult Contemporary radio domination."[1]

Background[]

James Valentine, the guitarist for Maroon 5, stated "it's cool for all of us to have [Stefani] on the record, and Adam won't shut up about how cool she is as a person. And Adam won't shut up about how cool she is as a person. A lot of times when you meet your idols it's a letdown, but it's the opposite case with Gwen, apparently." Valentine also told Billboard that Stefani's band No Doubt influenced the early incarnation of Maroon 5, Kara's Flowers.

Valentine added that the band was thrilled to work with Sia on the track, stating, "Living here in Los Angeles we've known Sia for a long time, back from when she was just an artist, before her second act as, like, the most brilliant pop songwriter of all time, so it was really cool just to work with her."[2]

Critical reception[]

Marissa G. Muller of Radio.com, called the song "the perfect closer. It's a slow-burning song, as Maroon 5 have been known to make."[3]

Live performances[]

Levine and Stefani performed the song at the 57th Grammy Awards on February 8, 2015. The song was also performed at the very beginning of Maroon 5's 2015 world tour, Maroon 5 World Tour 2015, however, it was replaced by "It Was Always You."[4]
